Internet Marketing as a Profession
For most people the idea of making websites, buying and selling domains, and outsourcing themselves for content creation and SEO optimization is a fun hobby, but its not a real world job. Their are many reasons why people may feel this way and I believe that one of the main reasons include the fact that currently you are unable to obtain a degree in Internet Marketing or Search Engine Optimization. Why am I writing about this? Well for me personally I have gone through my fair share of ridicule from the people closet to me for wanting to pursue a profession on the internet, and in reality I do not believe that it will stop any time soon. From my parents eyes, what I am doing on the computer is playing, making pretty websites and using social networking tools such as Twitter to leverage what I am doing. Granted I get monthly Google Adsense checks, as well as have several search engine optimization clients that I am constantly doing work for at a nice price, but for some reason I am unable to get over the hump of establishing this as a legitimate business.
It is my personal opinion that if their was some sort of college and/or high school curriculum for this profession it would become much more widely accepted by the masses. For example I currently view my profession as similar to that of a professional poker player. Their is a great risk involved, mainly because I am self employed and I am the main determining factor in whether or not I get paid nicely each month. Secondly, it is not a positively published profession, the older generation is uneducated about the internet marketing business, and nearly every day when you open a news paper or load up an internet news source you see something new about a different internet scam. For that reason its hard to gain the recongition that I feel is deserved for doing what it is that we do.
What I plan to Do
Although I am currently still a sophmore in college I do plan on becoming a part time professor at literally whatever college will accept me to teach internet marketing, once I graduate (or sooner if they will let me.) If for whatever reason their is no opportunity for me to pursue the teaching passion at school I would love to start up my own course locally in New York. In my opinion I would be able to get a solid turn out, and be able to teach people how to do what I do, as well as spread the positive word about the internet marketing profession.
What you should do
The bottom line here is, as an internet marketer you cannot let yourself get caught up in the downgrading talk from whomever it may come from. Instead, every time someone tells you to pursue an accounting degree so that you may secure a nice job out of college, just smile, go home, and put up another website. Use the negative or ignorant thoughts and actions of others as fuel for your fire! Go out and prove that you are doing something that can turn out as a nice income for yourself and your future family.
How do you feel about internet marketing as a profession? Is it for you? Why or Why Not? Comments appreciated
