How Long Should Blog Posts Be?

One of the biggest questions that I get asked by people looking to get into the blogging business, or internet marketing in general, is how long any particular blog post should be. Now there is no definitive answer to this, but I will do my best to try and explain what I do to ensure good SEO rankings, as well as maximum CTR with my PPC ads.
When you site down to write a blog post, you are going to have to decide what you main keyword is. Once you have done that it is a good idea to go out and find some related cousin keywords for the topic. These are going to the basis for your entire blog post, and will help to determine how long a particular blog post should be. I will generally repeat my main keyword once every one hundred words, and will do the same with every cousin keyword. Simple math would tell us that if you have one main keyword and three cousins, your post should be around 400 words. Unfortunately its not that easy to decide how long a particular blog post should be, and I would not recommend only making them four hundred words if in fact you have three cousins and a main keyword.
When writing a blog post you want to make sure that you answer someones question. This will give your site more credibility with search engines, which in turn will bring you more traffic, and ultimately make you more money in the long run. What you dont want however, is to be so detailed and specific that someone is going to be able to go out and implement everything that you’ve written and need no further guidance. Instead you want them to gain some but not all of the knowledge necessary, as doing this will give you a better chance of having someone click on an advertisement that you have placed on your website to gain further information. For instance if you write a blog post about a particular affiliate company. You want to review them truthfully, and answer some of the most frequently asked questions about affiliate marketing in general. What you do not want to do is answer every single question however and have someone make a decision while on your website to not go and take a look at the affiliate company by way of your affiliate link. That may have been a bad example now that I think about it, but you get the idea. Give them just enough content to enable them to do anything, but not enough so that they are have to do nothing more.
This particular post for example is just over 500 words, while my previous about what google does not want you to know about adsense is over 700. Different topics require differing amounts of writing to be done for them, but I would say that at a bare minimum, for your best search engine inclusion, five hundred words will suffice. One blogger that I know of, actually goes above and beyond this by writing in excess of 800 words per post, which in most cases is to long for anyone to read, and will give him a higher CTR on all of his PPC ads in the process.
