Getting Twitter Followers the Right Way Part 1

As I hinted to in my goals for 2010 one of my goals is to get 10,000 followers within the next 12 months. The easy (although ineffective) would be to go out and mass follow people, mainly in the internet marketing niche and have them follow me back (which they ultimately will) I have done this in the past and got my twitter following to over 7,000. Though a funny thing happened when I had all of those followers, none of them seemingly read any of my tweets. I would ask for opinions on blog posts, or tweet links and would get no feedback and ultimately no clicks. Sure I would get the occasional response or click, but it was not enough when you consider the fact that I have over 7,000 followers. Today I am going to explain how I go about getting followers the right way, so that when I ask for an opinion, or tweet out a link they interact and let me know their thoughts.

Twitter Search
The process all begins with the use of Twitter search. What I do after I make a new blog post, launch a new product, or start a new website is go to Twitter and seek out people who would be naturally interested, or are already talking about something similar to what I am posting about. For instance on my sports vlog I made a video recently about the Lebron James vs. Kobe Bryant debate. Once I did this I did the usual of tweeting out a link to the post, but the real success came when I used Twitter search.
I started by typing in “Lebron James” and the results that were given to me included all of the people who were currently talking about Lebron James. Once i have this data I will seek out “real” people (those who are not simply spamming links) and @ reply 5-10 of them giving my thoughts an opinions on lebron. I DO NOT actually post links to my post outside of the initial tweet to everyone. I do this as to not come across as spam, and to try and build actual relationships with all of those people who share a similar interest with me. I will then go and pick a different keyword from the post, in this case it would be Kobe Bryant, and repeat what I did before in talking to these people. Occasionally I will also follow all of those that I am @ replying, but again I want to make sure they are offering up genuine content and not just spam (which is most of what Twitter has become).

Responding Back to People
The thing that makes Twitter so powerful is the fact that everyone has a voice. Never before could so many people offer up so many differing views and actually be heard. With that in mind, I make it a point to respond to EVERY SINGLE @ reply that I receive. If the person send me an @ message saying “You and your blog suck” I still respond. I leave no stone unturned, and I would recommend that you do not do so either.

If you follow the process of interacting with people who have similar interest as you, you will ultimately find that they will follow you and you will therefore find yourself in a very favorable position to succeed down the road, when you have a big product or service or website that you want to launch.

Unfollowing People
With the millions of people on Twitter, you will find that you respond to someone, and follow them, but then at some point or another they turn into just another spam bot. Do not be afraid to unfollow people that “bring nothing to the table” for you, or what you are trying to achieve.

I hope to get alot of questions with this post, as im sure it might be confusing for some, which is fine. I do not consider myself to be a nobel prize winning author, and therefore I tend to ramble about things that do not need to be rambled about.

In any event, I hope this technique works for you and you begin to implement it in the future.

Part 2 of the series, will involve me recording a screen cast of me doing exactly what I am talking about in this post, so stay tuned for that!
