Domain Parking vs. Mini Site Devlopment
Recently, over at CCTLDS.com their has been a pretty interesting thread going about creating mini sites vs. parking your domain names. I figured I might as well weigh in on the subject here at PF.com seeing as how I myself do both, park, and develop.
Domain Parking
As of late, most of my time that I spend working has been taken up by me looking for solid domains to register by hand. For instance the other day I picked up WolfPups.net , MobileCreditCardProcessing.net , and OldeEnglish.net. All of these domains have high monthly search volume, and consequently these domains are receiving daily type in traffic (Olde English leading the pack) However the kicker in this entire deal is the fact that these are not making money! I mean think about it, if you type in an address into your web browser you are most definitely looking for something on that topic. Why would you simply leave the site? Wouldn’t it make sense to click on a targeted advertisement to get you to where you want to go? Apparently that’s not how it works, and I will tell you why. When people are looking for something they want, you guessed it, content, and they do not get that from Parked web pages. In essence simply owning the name is not enough, you need development. Granted their are people out their with these thousand domain portfolios, who make money off parking simply due to the laws surrounding large numbers, but those portfolios cost an arm to put together, and a leg to renew, and all your doing is putting up a junk page for people, that wont get indexed by search engines.
Mini site Development
As youve guessed, it is my personal favorite to develop the domains that I purchase as I believe that it gives them more value. The value comes from the fact that you are bound to receive higher CTR, you are going to get indexed by search engines, and your visitors are going to come back, because you have content for them to digest. None of those are true with parking. Lets look at my top three mini sites, Razor Blades Free Credit Repair Pitch Card Game. All of these sites are earning money every day, and I can tell you for a fact that if they were sitting there parked they would not be making diddly. All of them except for Free Credit Repair are receiving search engine traffic daily, and I anticipate that within the next month or two FCR will get search engine traffic, it is just tough to break through any credit related niche. But in any event, the bottom line here is, these sites are receiving type ins, search engine traffic, as well as indexes from Google. All of these things that would not be possible by simply parking the name.
So you see folks, by developing your names, you add value. Not to mention the fact that when you go to sell the name, the site is included and therefore you will be able to fetch a higher price with less effort.
If anyone believes that parking is the way to go, please weigh in on this topic as I am very interested in hearing your thoughts.
